Differences between domain name and web hosting

 We are often asked to explain the difference between the domain name (domain name) and hosting. Many users are not aware that these are two different concepts. In this article, we will explain the difference between the two, how they relate to each other and how important they are to creating a website.

What is a Domain Name?

On the internet we basically have an unlimited number of computer networks connected by cables. To easily identify them, each computer is assigned a number of numbers that we call an IP address. This IP address is a combination of numbers separated by a period. Typically, an IP address will look something like this: 66.249.66.1

Computers have no problem recognizing and remembering these numbers however it is impossible for people to memorize all these numbers to connect to the internet.

A domain name can now consist of words where it becomes easier to remember it as a web address.
So if you want to visit a website on the internet, you do not need to enter a string of numbers. Instead, you can enter an easy to memorize domain name such as domainseoservice.com

 

What is Web Hosting?

Website hosting is where all the files on a website are located. It is the house where a website 'lives'. A good way to remember this is if the domain name was the home address, then hosting is the actual home where the address determines its location. All websites on the internet need hosting.

When someone types in a domain name in a browser, it translates to the IP address of the computer provided by the hosting company. This computer contains the webpage files and sends them back to the browser used by the user.

Domain names and web hosting are two different internet services but they must coexist in order for a website to exist. Basically the domain name system is like a bulky address book where it is constantly being upgraded. Behind each domain name there is an address of the hosting service where the files of the website are stored.
